Shopify SEO Checklist for 2026: Everything You Need

The Complete Shopify SEO Checklist for 2026

SEO on Shopify is often misunderstood. People think it's just putting keywords in titles and calling it a day. In reality, proper Shopify SEO covers technical structure, content, speed, mobile, and dozens of other factors.

At Growth Lab, we've audited and optimized dozens of Shopify stores. Here's the complete checklist we follow for every client.

Technical SEO: The Foundation

Site Structure

  • [ ] Clear navigation: maximum 3 levels deep (Home > Collection > Product)
  • [ ] Clean URLs: no unnecessary parameters, short and descriptive slugs
  • [ ] Sitemap: verify your sitemap.xml is accessible at yourstore.com/sitemap.xml
  • [ ] Robots.txt: make sure it's not blocking important pages
  • [ ] Breadcrumbs: enable breadcrumb navigation to help Google understand your structure
  • [ ] No orphan pages: every page must be reachable via at least one internal link

Indexation

  • [ ] Google Search Console: submit your sitemap and monitor indexation
  • [ ] No duplicate pages: product variants shouldn't create separate pages
  • [ ] Canonical tags: correctly configured on every page (Shopify does this by default, but verify)
  • [ ] Noindex pages: set noindex on search pages, tags, and filter pages
  • [ ] 301 redirects: redirect all old URLs (especially after a migration)

Structured Data (Schema)

  • [ ] Product schema: name, price, availability, reviews -- for every product
  • [ ] Organization schema: company name, logo, contact info
  • [ ] BreadcrumbList schema: for breadcrumb navigation
  • [ ] FAQ schema: on pages that contain FAQs
  • [ ] Test with: Google's Rich Results Test tool

On-Page SEO: Content and Tags

Meta Tags

  • [ ] Unique title tags for every page (55-60 characters, keyword at the beginning)
  • [ ] Unique meta descriptions (150-160 characters, keyword included, call-to-action)
  • [ ] No empty meta descriptions: every product and collection must have one
  • [ ] Optimized URL slug: short, descriptive, with the main keyword

Product Pages

  • [ ] Unique H1 heading containing the primary keyword
  • [ ] Minimum 300-word description per product (two-line descriptions don't cut it)
  • [ ] Descriptive alt text on every product image
  • [ ] Image file names: descriptive (not IMG_4523.jpg, but red-summer-dress-2026.webp)
  • [ ] Customer reviews integrated with structured data
  • [ ] Internal links to related products and collections

Collection Pages

  • [ ] Unique 200-500 word description at the top of each collection
  • [ ] Optimized H1 with the collection keyword
  • [ ] Internal links to sub-collections and featured products
  • [ ] No duplicate content between collections

Blog

  • [ ] Publish regularly: minimum 2-4 articles per month
  • [ ] Target informational keywords: "how to choose...", "guide to...", "best..."
  • [ ] Articles of minimum 800 words with H2/H3 subheadings
  • [ ] Internal links to relevant collections and products
  • [ ] Optimized images with alt text in every article

Advanced Technical SEO

Site Speed

  • [ ] Google PageSpeed Insights: aim for 70+ score on mobile
  • [ ] WebP format images and compressed (use an app like TinyIMG)
  • [ ] Lazy loading enabled for images below the fold
  • [ ] Minimize Shopify apps: each app adds code. Keep only the ones you need.
  • [ ] Optimized theme: Dawn or a theme with strong baseline performance
  • [ ] Non-blocking JavaScript: verify third-party scripts aren't slowing down rendering

Mobile

  • [ ] Google Mobile-Friendly Test: pass it for every page template
  • [ ] Buttons and links large enough for fingers (minimum 44x44 pixels)
  • [ ] No hidden content on mobile that's visible on desktop
  • [ ] Simplified forms for small screens

Security and HTTPS

  • [ ] SSL enabled across the entire site (Shopify does this by default)
  • [ ] No mixed content (all resources loaded via HTTPS)

Local SEO (If Applicable)

  • [ ] Google Business Profile: created and verified
  • [ ] Consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) everywhere on the web
  • [ ] Google Reviews: actively request them from customers
  • [ ] LocalBusiness schema: added to your site
  • [ ] Location pages: if you have multiple locations, create a page for each

Off-Page SEO

Backlinks

  • [ ] Identify competitor backlinks (use Ahrefs or Semrush)
  • [ ] Guest posting on relevant blogs in your niche
  • [ ] Press mentions: reach out to local media and bloggers
  • [ ] Partnerships: collaborate with complementary brands for cross-links

Social Media

  • [ ] Complete profiles with a link to your site on every platform
  • [ ] Share your blog posts on social media
  • [ ] Pinterest: particularly powerful for eCommerce (every pin is a potential backlink)

Bilingual SEO in Canada

If your store targets both English and French Canadian audiences, bilingual SEO is essential:

  • [ ] Correct hreflang structure for FR and EN versions
  • [ ] Native French content (not translated from English)
  • [ ] Distinct URLs for each language (/fr/produit and /en/product)
  • [ ] Keywords researched in French (not translations of English keywords -- people search differently)
  • [ ] Google Search Console configured for both versions

Recommended Tools

  • Google Search Console: indexation tracking and performance monitoring (free)
  • Google Analytics 4: traffic and conversion analysis (free)
  • Ahrefs or Semrush: keyword research, technical audits, backlinks
  • Screaming Frog: technical site crawl
  • TinyIMG or Crush.pics: Shopify image compression
  • JSON-LD for SEO: Shopify app for structured data

Maintenance Schedule

SEO isn't a one-time project. Here's the maintenance cadence we recommend:

  • Weekly: publish blog content, check for errors in Search Console
  • Monthly: keyword and ranking audit, optimize underperforming pages
  • Quarterly: full technical audit, review backlink strategy
  • Annually: complete SEO strategy review and priority adjustments
